Shin-Sen-Gumi – Irvine

I’ve always had good experiences at Shin-Sen-Gumi in Irvine, especially with their ramen, so I came back to try some of the newer menu items. This time, I ordered the Oyakodon set, a seafood sushi taco with uni and eel, and one of the udon dishes. Unfortunately, this visit didn’t live up to my previous ones. The restaurant itself was clean and well maintained, and the staff were as friendly as always. Service was prompt, and lunch is still one of the easier times to visit without much of a wait. The biggest disappointment was the Oyakodon. Traditionally, the egg should be soft, silky, and slightly creamy so it blends into the chicken and rice. Instead, the egg was completely overcooked. It came out fully set into dry, chunky curds, almost like scrambled eggs, instead of having that smooth, custard-like texture that makes a good Oyakodon so comforting. The chicken was seasoned well, but the overcooked egg took away from what should have been the highlight of the dish. I also tried the seafood sushi taco with uni and eel. My absolute favorite spot for delicious, comforting Japanese udon in Irvine! While Shin-Sen-Gumi is famous for its ramen, I personally come here specifically for their amazing udon. The Food: They serve classic dashi-based udon, but what really excites me is their cream-based options like the Carbonara Udon and Uni Cream Udon. It’s so hard to find authentic Japanese-style cream udon in the US, so being able to satisfy that craving here is amazing. I also love that they offer unique seasonal udon specials, which gives me something new to look forward to on every visit! The Vibe: The staff is incredibly energetic, friendly, and welcoming. The interior has a warm, family-friendly feel—they even display children's coloring pages on the walls, which is a lovely touch. Location & Parking: It's conveniently located inside the Woodbury Town Center, making it the perfect spot to grab a bite after running errands or shopping. Best of all, there is plenty of parking available in the plaza lot. Highly recommended if you want to experience a different, delicious side of Shin-Sen-Gumi!

We were sat at the bar and were seated immediately. The chef Juan was warm and welcoming. The food was delicious. We had a hakata red ramen and hakata white. With giant shrimp tempura and squid legs and potato salad. Everything was delicious, hot and big portions. I have been wanting to come here for years so glad I did.

Ordered a Hakata ramen to‑go for my kid. The portion was pretty small, and it only came with two slices of meat. For $15, it feels slightly expensive for what you get. The taste was just okay — nothing special. Overall, not really worth the price.
